Michael really enjoys the company of Villa Tommaso’s congenial hosts and the “quality, slow food experience” of Castelbuono.
On the outskirts of Castelbuono (about 1km), near Cefalu, and only 13km from the sea, these apartments, in an early 19th century castle, are surrounded by beautiful countryside. Villa Tommaso, in one hectare of grounds, has magnificent views towards the town and mountains, which soar up behind – within a 10 minute car ride, it reaches 1,300m above sea level.
Authentically restored, with natural stone, dustings of pink and terracotta, and with grounds dotted with olives, a rose garden and lofty palms and oaks, Diego and Cinzia, have chosen a minimalist style of furnishing to echo their castle’s simplicity – terracotta floors, rustic wooden furniture, walls in typical local plaster and lots of natural materials. The five agritourist apartments, off a central courtyard, are very tasteful and of very good quality, although not over furnished. There is a welcoming and comfortable communal reading room, which is very cool in summer. Diego has built a barbecue in a delightful, walled courtyard, where there are tables and chairs for al fresco dining. Past clients recount tales of pleasant evenings, spent eating and drinking (!!), in the company of other guests. Take your deck chairs wherever you please, but our favourite spot, on a hot summer’s day, is under the huge oaks, where there are seats and hammocks to enjoy the shade and lovely views.
The charming and fascinating old town of Castelbuono, set in the heart of the Monti Madonie National Park, is surrounded by towering mountains and lush green valleys. Renowned as the Park’s most well-kept town, its 13th century castle, sturdy and strong, watches over the steep, crooked streets with their tumble of houses, fountains and piazzas. Only 73km from Palermo, 20km from Cefalu and 13km from the sea, they say its climate is never too hot and never too cold, so it was always a favourite choice of Italian aristocracy. Its picturesque centre is perfect for a “passeggiata”, and the excellent restaurants offer Castelbuono cuisine, which is really superb.
So many clients really love this special place. Awarded 5 agritourist stars for historical importance, location and a special kind of hospitality, all are certainly charmed by Diego’s genuine warmth, kindness and personal attention.
