Alex loves the atmosphere, its location in “the heart of Baroque” and the owners, who have “Baroque at heart”.

Close to picturesque Comiso, and half an hour from lovely beaches, Villa Alfredo is a grand farm estate. Run by the lovely owners, Alfredo, his brother Giuseppe and their family, it is a wonderful place, which exudes character. There is an old olive press, a fine example of a traditionally decorated cart and a little church. This whole masseria is steeped in history.

Apartments are in converted farm-workers’ houses, off the courtyard. They are Sicilian and rustic, tasteful, and with fairly simple kitchen areas. Most have a terrace, some leading on to the garden, near the pool, which is in a lovely walled garden, with seats dotted about, under trees. There is a cultivated area, where guests may pick vegetables or fruit in season. They may also collect fresh eggs for breakfast! Further down, there is a special breed of Ragusan donkey, a horse, goats, rabbits, chickens, geese and pheasants.

Very much family-run, the restaurant feels special and intimate, as they cater only for guests of the apartments. Excellent, home-cooked, traditionally Sicilian, the food is delicious. Past clients have also enjoyed the cookery courses.

24km from Caltagirone, famed for ceramics, and 8km from the historical town of Comiso, it is ideal for exploring this fascinating corner of Sicily, and is within easy reach of the coast.
